Travel and photography always go hand in hand, at least for me. I always have this doubt, whether “I travel, so I photograph” or “I photograph, so I travel”. Anyways, 2009 was really big year for me, as i did 3 major travel expeditions.

Visited the Kalinga for the first time, covering close to 500Kms. Orrisa (a guide said at Puri, as the cultural hub of India) is an interesting state to visit and explore, as you have extreme options, the beaches, backwaters, temples, buddhist monasteries and tribal villages. Though my trip was a short one, i enjoyed exploring the options at Bhubaneshwar, Puri, Konark and the Chilka Lake. Dated June 2009.

Two underdeveloped states of the North, Bihar and Jharkhand are the ones, which i would like to visit again in the future, as they were not properly documented. 2009 gave me a mini opportunity to visit Jharkhand and visited Kolkata, as a bumper. Dated November 2009.

8 days. 800kms. 8 towns. 3 states. 70 riders. 25 support members. You know, what i mean. Its a prestigious opportunity for me to be the official photographer of #TFN09. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole of TFN 09. Dated December 2009.

Wishing for a Great and Grand 2010.

Two things happened last weekend for me.. At least i understood that only last weekend. The whole lot of migrated people like me in Bangalore city moving to their own native places to celebrate Diwali, every single mode of transportation is flooded with waters of tunga, bhadra and krishna.

First thing first…
A friend of mine is doing a photo story on migrated population in Bangalore with a detailed study on people from norht Karnataka. I was telling him sometime back that its sad to see them, working hard in bangalore for a single better meal a day. It didn’t strike me that I’m also on a migration here. But understood the truth only last weekend when i saw the millions of crowd in the bus/railway stations. If somebody is interested to do a story on the white collar migrations, please reach out to me. I will surely be of some use. :).

Second thing second…

I generally don’t plan my trips to pondicherry. All these years, its more of a hop-on trips. I do standing journeys, break journeys, half journeys etc… as i just can’t book my tickets well in advance, like a friend of mine does train booking 60days in advance.

Ok.. now to the reality… I was waiting in the silk board bus stop for some bus. My mind said “dont wait for any specific bus.. just hop on”. My eyes were looking for the bus boards with place names like pondicherry, thiruvannamalai, cuddalore.. salem. I was even ready to take a bus to chennai and travel down 150kms to home. But, lucky me without waiting for a long, i got into a thiruvannamalai bus and even got to sit in Conductors seat. It took more than 180 minutes to reach hosur town, which is just 30kms from silk board. So much of Traffic, diversions and tsunami of cars moving to cross the state border to buy crackers cheap. I saw live, how difficult it is to drive a bus in such conditions, where you have men, women, bikes, cars, buses and trucks crossing in all possible angles. A fellow traveller in the bus was cribbing that he is getting late and asked driver to go FAST. The GOOD Driver’s Reaction: “I Can’t take any RISK here for you to Celebrate Diwali in time. We have NO DIWALI, Cos, I’m taking you to your home“. What a TRUTH. I was taken aback and was thinking about this for a while. I could just think. Nothing more i could do then..

Recently visited 3 entirely different and contrast cities… across 3 states in the Eastern part of the country, the only connect being the GANGES.

Kolkata (formerly CALCUTTA) is the most populous and most denser city in the country, which lies on the Hoogly river. Kolkata is one of the oldest cities, and was the Capital of British India till 1911. A colorful city, also termed as the cultural and intellectual captital of India, which gave Subash Chandra Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa, Satyajit Ray and JC Bose among others to the country. The city is famous and noted for Trams, Metro, Howrah, River Ghats and Female Trafficking.
On the Hoogly...

Varanasi, also called as Kaasi and Banaras, is the oldest living city on Earth. The history goes back to 2500 years and is still not changed. One must say, this city as the “HOLIEST” and “DIRTIEST” city on Earth. With Ganges flowing from south to North in this city in the cresent shape, this city has 84 ghats. The notable and famous ghats are Manikarnika/Harishchandra, Dasashwamedha, panchakoot, Assi and Tulsi Ghats. At any point of time, you can see death bodies, washing clothes, brushing and bathing, poojas and final rites on the Ganges.
count me if you can

Dhanbad is the coal capital of India, which contributes to more than 40% of coal to India, from 100s of Collieries there. This dustiest city is one of the top 30 cities in the country and the Dhanbad Railway Region holds the 2nd position on the profitability. This is a city which is almost close to complete is maintained by TATAs. Though the literacy levels of Bihar and Jharkhand is under 50%, Dhanbad produces, so many IAS, IPS officers and Engineers every year. Here is one the Engineers from Dhanbad, getting married.
made for each other

This post is just to give a brief intro… Lemme write my experiences across in the forthcoming posts. Watch this space for MORE.

Can i call myself as a great victim for the fuel hike?
Even if you say NO… Lemme call myself a victim.

It all started in May, when we started planning for a trip to Gujarat and Rajasthan in August 2008. After discussing with fellow photographers of Ahmedabad and few shutterbugs from Bangalore, we decided to explore only Rajasthan in a span of 11 full days (August 14th to August 24th, convincingly planned to combine the Independence day holidays).

Guess, it was 6th June, i got my flight tickets booked for both ways of journey (Rs.8900 per head for a return trip to Jaipur). Thanks to Spicejet and we even called them our Official carrier for the trip then. But, when, the news on fuel hike came in the mid of 2nd week, Spicejet happily canceled their flights and left us in trouble, without even informing us. I called them, when i find no flight in the list, they agreed to pay 100% money back.

We don’t wanna cancel the trip, just becos, Spicejet canceled the flights, and this time, we got Jet lite and Indigo to help us out. Though this exercise of re booking the tickets cost me Rs.3000 extra per head, we went on and booked the tickets. Thanks to Arul for accepting this time too.. to go with a re booking and visit Rajasthan.

On June 24th, there was an another shock, when Jet lite canceled the flight and scheduled for different time, with a price hike of Rs.3000. I seriously don’t know, what to call this now, my fate, my bad luck?

As a last try, I re booked ticket again with an Indigo flight, and advanced my trip by a week (This time, its 7th August to 17th August 2008). Thanks Arul, again, for the support this time too.

Now, with fingers crossed, I’m waiting for something good to happen. If at all, if our INDIGOites Cancel or Reschedule the flights or Increase the price further, I will be GAME for a TEN DAYS TRIP in KARNATAKA or TAMILNADU. And, will call all these Air Travel as HAIR Travel.

Hope you guys are not praying for a cancellation or a price hike. 🙂 If you happen to be a victim, of any of this sort, please let me know. I need a company too.

~ peevee.
